For something so seemingly simple and essential as drinking water, plenty of misconceptions certainly exist about possible water benefits and harms. So without further ado, here’s the second article from the [Fact or Myth] collection.

Does drinking water help you lose weight? Evidence suggests that the answer can go both ways, but it all boils down to one’s lifestyle choices. On its own, drinking water won’t specifically trigger weight loss – but it can certainly aid the process.

People sometimes mistake thirst for hunger, so opting for a glass of water before a meal is probably a good idea. Not only those this hydrates your body, but it makes it easier for you to drop sugar-sweetened beverages from your menu – thereby reducing your overall number of calories intake (from sugary drinks). Drinking water also makes you feel fuller, and you may end up eating lesser at each meal. But that’s just about it.

There’s no truth at all in ‘drinking water flushing fat out of the system’, so don’t go about replacing all your meals with water. The key to weight loss is actually in permanently changing your routine behaviour so as to maintain a healthier weight over the long term.

P.S Contrary to popular belief, you do not lose more weight just by drinking more water! You may like to read these articles for more information on good water drinking habits: What’s Your Daily Water Requirement | When Overdrinking Water Becomes Deadly.
